There are many ways to avoid falls by optimizing your living space and surrounding areas with fall prevention ideas. But often times people forget that you can optimize yourself physically to prevent falls.

It is very important as we grow older to stay fit and stay active physically. It becomes even more important to our health the older we get.  Exercising keeps you alive and energized. It also helps to flush toxins and to release the good enzimes for your brain such as dopamine. Exercising also helps to oxygenate your entire body. And it also helps your over all physical balance.

Balance exercises are imperative in order to prevent falls in the elderly. Here we will discuss a very basic balance exercise to get you started. At the end you will find a link to a very good resource for more balancing exercises as well as many other exercises for elderly.

Before we get started, you will need a chair and comfortable sneakers.

 

 

 

 

Step 1

Stand next to your chair. Hold on to the chair with both hands and stand on one leg. Make sure to stand up straight. As you stand there, inhale and exhale slowly five times. Try to feel the balance over your ankle of your whole body.

Step 2

Slowly lower the first leg (right or left). Now do the same with the other leg.

Step 3

Repeat the exercise(steps 1&2) while holding on to the chair with one hand. You can switch hands if you want to.

Step4

Repeat steps 1 and 2 while holding on with one finger.

The end goal is to be able to stand on either leg without holding on to the chair. You can ad variations to your balance excercise. Try lifting your leg up with the knee at waist level and balance. Increase breaths from 5 to 10 per leg.

Remember to do this every day for at least 20 minutes.

Balance is very important as we get older and it has to be practiced. There’s no other way.
